Joelle Ostrowski, Financial Coach, Be Simple Financial

Do you make good money, but don’t know where it goes?

Yeah, that was me too.

Although I have always been good with money, like most people, I didn’t have a clear idea of where my money was going. Let’s just say we were spending 1/4 of our monthly budget on food. EEKS!

My path on getting clear with money began when I suddenly became solely responsible for caring for my mom who had dementia. After her husband passed I was in charge of her finances and overstuffed home while having 2 children, a husband, and a full time job, enter overwhelm.

From this experience, I learned how important it was to have money saved for retirement. I was so thankful that my mom had saved enough money so I could get help caring for her, which could have easily taken me down.

Secondly, I learned that I never want to have a lot of stuff. I spent years cleaning out my mom’s home. This led me to want to declutter my own home. I found Marie Kondo’s book The Magic of Tiding Up and read it in one night. The process of decluttering my home set in motion the desire to declutter other areas of my life, next being my finances. After all, I had a daughter who was 14 and going off to college soon. Although I had saved $50 a month since she was 6 months old, I only had $10,000 saved, definitely time to get serious about saving. I tracked my spending, implemented a bill paying system, and got clear on what I wanted my money to do for me.

Getting clear on where my money was going allowed me to align my spending to my values, which in turn allowed me to go after a lifelong dream of starting this business.  After 30 years as an educator and becoming consumer DEBT FREE, I was able to leave my job at age 52 and follow my passion of helping others with their finances. Looking forward to starting my second act!

I want to help you simplify your finances so that you can go after your dreams.
